Local cinephiles and lovers of a good story should be in heaven for the next few days, as the 15th annual Hamilton Film Festival has officially kicked off its 2020 selection of movies; and with this year’s festival theme of ‘variety,’ there’s pretty much something for everyone.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Hamilton Film Festival is a hybrid event, with a combination of socially-distanced in-person screenings as well as virtual screenings that can be enjoyed safely and comfortably at home.
With screenings occurring for limited audiences at venues like the Playhouse Cinema, Westdale Theatre, and Starlite Drive-In Theatre, the festival has made a point of supporting the city’s independent cinemas during a difficult time.
“With so many festivals offering online only, we knew we had to support these venues that we rely on,” explains Nathan Fleet, CEO of the Hamilton Film Festival. “We’ve always aimed to earn the ‘Hamilton’ in our title, and this is one of the ways we’ll do it this year.”
But what can local movie lovers expect on those screens? The Hamilton Film Festival has curated a stacked lineup, with 70 Canadian films and a selection of international titles from the USA, Australia, UK, Japan, Germany, and more. Best of all, 24 of the films are made by Hamilton based or born filmmakers!
With feature length films and shorts, with comedies and dramas and thrillers and family films, locals can expect a great variety of new cinema at this year’s festival with something to scratch any film-loving itch.
The 15th annual Hamilton Film Festival kicks off tonight, November 7th, and runs through until November 15th with a packed schedule of screenings, panels, Q&As, workshops, and more. Check out their website for the full lineup and ticket information.
