Hamilton author Gary Barwin lands on Canada Reads 2021 longlist

A prolific writer and Hamilton resident has landed on the longlist for one of Canada’s most prestigious national literary recognitions.

Hamilton author Gary Barwin’s nautical novel Yiddish for Pirates is among the 15 new Canadian books selected for the 2021 longlist of Canada Reads, an annual CBC competition for outstanding new homegrown literature.

In its 20th anniversary year, Canada Reads features a selection of notable panelists who choose and defend their favourite new works of Canadian-written literature that they believe should be read by all Canadians.

The current 15-title longlist – which also features works by authors including Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle, Jessica J. Lee, Joshua Whitehead, Monique Gray Smith, C.L. Polk, Water Scott, and Heather O’Neill – will be further narrowed down to a shortlist which will be announced on January 14th.

From there, the final debates for Canada Reads will be broadcast March 8th to 11th on CBC, where this year’s panelists will defend their selected books and an ultimate winner will be declared.

Barwin’s book, his debut novel for adults, is published by Penguin Random House and was also shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize as well as the Governor General’s Award for Literature; two of the most prestigious literary honours in the country.
