Here are some Hamilton musicians you can support for Bandcamp Friday

Every Friday since March 2020, music company Bandcamp has waived their revenue share from purchases made on the website in order to help support musicians during a period when touring is almost impossible.

Last year, music fans used Bandcamp Friday to help artists and labels earn a total of $40 million that allowed those in the music industry cover everyday expenses such as rent, groceries, medications, and much more amid the pandemic.

The beginning of 2021 also looks like touring might be quite far away, so the website announced that they will be continuing with Bandcamp Fridays with all the proceeds from sales going straight to artists.

February 5th marks the first Bandcamp Friday of 2021 and we thought we would celebrate by sharing a few Hamilton musicians you can help support through purchasing music and merchandise through the site.

TV Freaks

A local punk band that released their newest album People back in October 2020. Their most recent release was also dedicated to iconic Hamilton venue This Ain’t Hollywood.

The Dirty Nil

These guys are definitely rising stars in the punk scene and have toured southern Ontario relentlessly before the shutdown. Their newest album Fuck Art was released on January 1st, 2021.

Basement Revolver

They’ve been described as “modern dream pop” and “heavy-lidded fuzz pop” but are probably one of the biggest shoegaze bands in the city. Their newest EP release, Wax and Digital, came out in 2019.

Wax Mannequin

Described as a “hybrid of Bruce Cockburn and Frank Zappa,” Wax Mannequin has been part of the Hamilton music scene since the early 2000s. His most recent record is 2018’s Have a New Name.

Ben Caplan

Caplan was born and raised in Hamilton, but now lives out in Halifax. The folk troubadour often performs with his band, The Casual Smokers. His most recent album release, Old Stock, came out in 2018.

Jessy Lanza

The electronic songwriter, producer, and vocalist has an explosive 2020 with the release with critically acclaimed album All The Time. A mixtape featuring several UK artists remixing songs from All The Time was released in December.

iskwē

The Indigenous singer-songwriter and activist of Cree, Dené, and Irish heritage was nominated for the Juno Awards in 2018 and shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize for her album The Fight Within.

Ellis

The dream pop singer-songwriter gathered attention from fellow indie artists Palehound and Soccer Mommy, eventually touring with both. Ellis released Born Again in April of 2020.

Schizophrenic Records

Not exactly one exclusive artist, but indie label Schizophrenic Records has been releasing some of the best indie punk in southern Ontario. Bands like TV Freaks, Sadie and the Wives, and No Blues have all released music on the label.
