Netflix is looking to open a new Canadian office

Although places like Toronto and Vancouver are being thrown out as potential destinations, there is an argument for Hamilton being the new Canadian home for Netflix

The popular US-based streaming service announced last week that they are going to open a new office in Canada and hire a content chief dedicated to commissioning local originals.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos wrote in a blog post that they have spent about $2.5 billion in Canada since 2017 and it was time to make a more direct move in continuing to produce more local originals.

“We want to build on that momentum and make a new home for Netflix in Canada – opening an office and hiring a dedicated content executive to work directly with the Canadian creative community,” Sarandos said.

“We could only have dreamed in 2012 when our first original production began filming in Ontario (Hemlock Grove) what an important part of our business Canada would become.”

Netflix already has a production hub in Toronto that it created in 2019 by leasing eight sound stages and office spaces. The new office will be an addition to their presence in the country.

Sarandos said they are set to announce several Canadian projects and relationships in the coming weeks with a goal to tell stories of underrepresented groups.

Hamilton has become a filming hub since more and more productions began shooting around the city over the last few years. The city has even been home to a number of Netflix original series, including The Umbrella Academy, The Queen’s Gambit, and Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker.
