CFL announces 14-game comeback season for 2021

Get ready, sports fans: the Canadian Football League (CFL) has announced that a 14-game comeback season will be going ahead for 2021.

That means Hamilton’s beloved Tiger-Cats will be returning to Tim Hortons Field for kickoff once again, thanks to a go-ahead vote from the league’s Board of Governors.

The season will kick off officially on August 5th, and culminate with the 108th Grey Cup on December 12th right here in Hamilton.

“This is an exciting day for Canadian football and for Canada itself,” says Randy Ambrosie, CFL Commissioner.

“I want to thank our fans, players, coaches, and partners for their incredible support and patience as we’ve worked together towards this day. This is great news for everyone who loves our game and our country.”

The fate of the CFL’s 2021 season was uncertain amid continued concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on large events, including sports.

A placeholder date of August 5th was announced in April, but the 2021 season was up in the air pending approvals from officials on a government level to allow a significant number of fans to attend games in person.

Luckily, with vaccine rollout accelerating quickly in Canada, the 2021 season has been given the go-ahead; though, levels of possible in-person attendance will likely vary depending on location.

“We are on track to receive all of the necessary health and safety approvals, thanks to our tireless medical advisors and staff, and the dedicated government officials who have been working with them,” adds Ambrosie.

“And while the outlook for fans in the stands varies from province to province, we are confident that process is also on the right track.”

The last official CFL game played ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic was the 107th Grey Cup on November 24th of 2019.

A full schedule for the 2021 CFL season has freshly been announced, with the first game on August 5th seeing the Hamilton Tiger-Cats go head-to-head with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Schedule details and tickets are available on the CFL website.
