Hamilton’s Theatre Aquarius announces exciting 2021-2022 season

In a thrilling sign of brighter days ahead, Hamilton’s largest professional theatre company has just announced a full 2021-2022 season of exciting shows.

Theatre Aquarius – the city’s regional theatre and a venue that’s been largely shuttered through the pandemic – recently went through massive change behind the scenes with the retirement of former longstanding artistic director Ron Ulrich, making way for the theatre’s new leader: veteran theatre artist Mary Francis Moore.

Under Moore, the forthcoming 2021-2022 season already feels like a breath of fresh air, with more diversity in storytelling and a greater focus on local voices; two aspects of programming Aquarius has been criticized for lacking in years prior.

The season kicks off with a comeback cabaret-style show called Home For the Holidays, which features a small-but-mighty company of Hamilton talent including Olivia Sinclair-Brisbane, Hailey Gillis, Stephen Ingram, Emily Lukasik, Adam Stevenson, and Patrick Bowman, who will be presenting rousing renditions of festive staples in a concert format.

Then, in January, the multi-award-winning sensation Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story takes the mainstage. A Klezmer-folk musical created by Hamilton-born troubadour Ben Caplan along with acclaimed playwright Hannah Moscovitch and director Christian Barry, the show also stars Caplan and tells the story of two Jewish Romanian refugees making their way to Canada in 1908. Both rousing and deeply moving, this show is unmissable.

Following that in February is Made in Italy, a one-man coming-of-age story created and performed by Farren Timoteo that follows a second-generation Italian teen growing up and finding his place in Jasper, Alberta; and after that in March comes The Hours That Remain by award-winning Métis playwright Keith Barker, an intense and moving play about a woman who has spent the last five years investigating the disappearance of her sister.

But that’s not all! Theatre Aquarius is also excitingly making a return to fuller-scale programming in their intimate Studio Theatre, starting with the world premiere of Pat & Skee by veteran Canadian playwright Sky Gilbert and followed by Tarragon Theatre and Black Theatre Workshop’s co-production of Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers by Makambe K. Simamba, described as “a protest for all Black life beyond headlines and hashtags.”

Finally, to round out the season in June 2022, the toe-tapping Johnny Cash musical Ring of Fire hits the mainstage after being postponed numerous times due to the pandemic, bringing the exciting 2021-2022 season to a celebratory close.

The season has all the makings of a triumphant return to live theatre after Theatre Aquarius, and most other venues like it, have been more or less dark since March 2020.

Tickets to Theatre Aquarius’ 2021-2022 season will be available online starting November 29th at 11 am. Attendees will be required to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to attend, and masks will be mandatory while in the theatre.
