Nightmare Alley, filmed in Hamilton, gets Best Picture nod at 2022 Oscars

Another movie shot in Hamilton has racked up a number of nominations at the 2022 Academy Awards, including a nod for Best Picture.

Nightmare Alley, the latest film by acclaimed director and self-proclaimed Hamilton lover Guillermo del Toro, is a stylish and atmospheric neo-noir that’s received overwhelmingly positive reviews worldwide since its release in December.

Starring heavyweight Hollywood talent like Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, and Richard Jenkins, Nightmare Alley is adapted from the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same title and follows Cooper as a carnival worker with a mysterious past.

On top of being shot in locations like Toronto and Buffalo, some of Nightmare Alley was also filmed in numerous locations right here in Hamilton, including The Cotton Factory, the Hamilton Cemetery, and an alley off of Rebecca Street.

Hamilton has been featured prominently in multiple other del Toro films including Crimson Peak, famously filmed at Dundurn Castle; and The Shape of Water, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2018.

On top of the coveted Best Picture nod, Nightmare Alley has also received Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

With Hamilton becoming a hotter and hotter spot for film production, it’s not surprising that projects shot in our city are getting recognized by the most prominent award organizations in the world!

The 2022 Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 27th.
