Over 50 Hamilton sites are free to explore this weekend

Doors Open is an annual Ontario-wide event for the public to explore their city’s rich history, culture, and architecture with free visits to a variety of interesting locations. For Hamilton, Doors Open will run this weekend on Saturday May 4th and Sunday May 5th, 2019.

This will be the 17th annual Doors Open Hamilton event with more than 50 participating sites to visit over the weekend, including 15 new sites never listed for Doors Open Hamilton before.

The Provincial theme for 2019 is ‘Communication’ which will have Playhouse Cinema, The Westdale, Cable 14, and the CBC Hamilton building all be open to walk through.

Other buildings that are rarely open to the public include Auchmar, Dundas Wastewater Treatment Plant, John Weir Foote Armoury, and Westinghouse HQ. Among the list will be staple museums like Battlefield House Museum, Dundurn Castle, Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology, Whitehern, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Fieldcote Memorial Museum, and so much more. In fact, Hamilton appears to have more sites listed than any other Ontario city — a testament to how historic and unique our city is.

The full list of all 50+ sites can be found on the official Door Open Hamilton website.

“Doors Open Hamilton is a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to explore some of the most architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings across the city. It is one of my favourite events of the year,” says Ian Kerr-Wilson, Manager of the Heritage Resource Management.
