Margaret Atwood speaks about Handmaid sequel in Hamilton

Since Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale became an Emmy-award winning television show, the image of the handmaid’s red gown and white hat has become a symbol of women’s rights. Now, we are only a few days away from the release of the highly anticipated sequel The Testaments on September 10th.

To align with the release of Atwood’s latest work, Hamiltonians can celebrate the new novel at an exclusive event that is broadcast live in cinemas around Canada. The Playhouse Cinema will be hosting the event as broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed interviews the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic, and inventor.

The conversation will span Atwood’s career, her diverse range of works, and why she returned to her seminal handmaid story after 34 years. The event will also feature special guests reading from The Testaments.

Atwood’s latest novel has already garnered the attention of many awards and critics in Canada. She has earned a spot on the long list for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

Joining Atwood and other celebrated authors is Hamilton-born K.D. Miller, who has been nominated for her short story collection “Late Breaking.” The stories featured in the book are loosely based on the art of Canadian painter Alex Colville.

The short list for the Giller prize will be announced on September 30th, with the winner named at a Toronto gala on November 18th.
