New Hamilton history exhibit launches at the Art Gallery

While Hamilton is loud and proud about its bustling visual art scene, many locals may not know too much about the formative history of the city’s visual arts and the role they may have played in establishing Hamilton’s cultural identity today.

That’s why it’s worth getting excited about Building Cultural Legacies, a new exhibit formally launching at the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) this Friday December 6th that takes a fascinating deep dive into Hamilton’s visual art history between 1950 and 2000.

Presented by the Hamilton Arts Council in partnership with the AGH and the Hamilton Public Library, this exhibit and digital storytelling project aims to paint a picture (pun intended) of Hamilton’s artistic past and inform its impact on the city today.

The exhibit, which is set to run until May 18th of 2020, will also feature a collection of stories, anecdotes, and archival tidbits from Hamilton’s artists and art institutions that tell the story of a fascinating full half-century of the city’s visual art history.

“This is an important project. The fantastic stories that we will be gathering and sharing within Building Cultural Legacies are incredibly powerful in connecting us to who we are, where we came from, and where we are going,” says Christopher McLeod, Project Director for Building Cultural Legacies.

The exhibit will also remain ever-changing and growing; artists and institutions who worked in Hamilton between the years 1950 and 2000 are invited to continue sharing stories, images, and artifacts that will be featured and included as a piece of Hamilton’s art history and legacy.

Local art and history lovers would be foolish to miss this very special exhibit and glimpse at the expansive, impactful visual art world of Hamilton’s history!

Building Cultural Legacies has its formal opening with a reception at the Art Gallery of Hamilton on Friday December 6th at 6 pm, and the exhibit will run through to May 18th, 2020. For more information, check out the AGH’s website.
