Hammer City Records, one of the city’s stalwart places to buy punk, hardcore, and metal music, will be closing after new landlords allegedly told them that the shop is a little bit too “old Hamilton.”
The announcement was made on the Hammer City Records Facebook page on Monday and cited that the new owners of the building apparently don’t want a record store in the basement space.
The record store owners said that the closure is not because of COVID-19 or any other financial reason that has impacted the business.
Hammer City Records will be expected to vacate their location on James Street North by November 30th.
With many items in the store marked down, the owners are trying to raise enough money for first and last month’s rent while they look for a new location in the city.
Hammer City Records has been a destination for those in the counterculture for about a decade.
To help support the store, visit their current location at 226 James Street North between Friday and Sunday each week before the end of November.
