Theatre Ancaster brings the best Motown hits to the stage

A Hamilton community theatre company known for its professional-quality productions is bringing a particularly special show in their popular concert series to the stage.
Theatre Ancaster is presenting The Music of Motown at the Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre (357 Wilson St E) from April 19th to May 5th, promising an energetic tribute to an era of music – and the iconic artists behind it – that defined a generation.
When speaking to co-director Matt Miller, his excitement for this show to finally hit the stage is infectious.
“This is the show I’ve been waiting for since joining Theatre Ancaster back in 2018. I’ve always viewed the birth and early years of Motown as one of the most magical times in music,” says Miller.
“It’s a label that became a sound, a sound that became a genre, and a genre that became a catalyst for change. Motown tore down walls and brought people together regardless of where they were from or the colour of their skin.”
Audiences can expect a soulful evening of Motown hits by favourites like Aretha Franklin, The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Temptations, and beyond performed by talented vocalists accompanied by a live band.
Not only that, the concert will feature a special guest: Hamilton-born musician Harrison Kennedy, a legitimate Motown icon known for his formidable solo career and collaborations with artists like Marvin Gaye and Chairmen of the Board.
“I don’t think any of us would have believed we’d get the chance to share the stage with someone who was there; someone who not only saw all the history behind Motown happen, but took part in it,” adds Miller. “He’s an absolute marvel to perform with.”
With such a direct line to Motown’s past and an exuberant look at its impacts on the present, The Music of Motown is poised to be a show you shouldn’t miss.
