Delta Secondary School in Hamilton is up for sale and could fetch up to $7 million

Hamilton public school trustees approved the move of Delta Secondary School to the open market back on February 24th after no public agency, including the city, showed interest within a 90-day deadline.

The heritage building on Main Street East could fetch up to $7 million to a private buyer says Ward 4 Councillor Sam Merulla in a report in the Hamilton Spectator.

Merulla said he is confident the 2.5-hectare property will sell now that it’s been moved to the open market. The price tag also rules out affordable housing developments, which was a major concern for neighbourhood residents at an open house held by the school board in December.

Delta Secondary School closed last June as part of an accommodation plan that also saw the closure of John A. Macdonald and Parkview high schools. The new Bernie Custis Secondary School opened in September to accommodate the area.

This year marks 96 years since the construction of Delta’s main building making it the oldest operating high school in Hamilton before it closed at the end of the last school year. Additions were made in 1948 and 1970. The city put a heritage designation on the main building and first addition in 2014.

Merulla expects two or more developers to work together because of the difficulty and variety of tasks included in restoring the heritage protected sites and building any new buildings.
