The 10 Best Donut Shops in Hamilton for 2018

What’s a better treat than a freshly baked donut?

There’s a number of great spots to grab donuts in Hamilton, but we’ve narrowed them down to what we believe are the absolute best in the city.

Here’s our 2018 list for Hamilton’s 10 best donut shops.

  Cake & Loaf Bakery

Coming in at number 10 is Cake & Loaf Bakery. This Hamilton favourite is known for their wide variety of goods, ranging from custom birthday cakes to chocolate bars. The creative possibilities at Cake & Loaf are absolutely endless.

A few times a year, the bakers will stray from their usual rotation of baked goods to create donuts. As soon as word spreads that it’s pumpkin spice donut day, customers flock to the bakery and the donuts fly off the shelves. The perfect balance of sweet and savoury, their donuts remind me of a perfect fall day.

As much as I would like to see Cake & Loaf sell baked donuts more often, it is said that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

  Democracy Coffee House

Democracy on Locke understands that dietary restrictions shouldn’t stand in the way of access to delicious, indulgent food. The coffee shop sells plenty of vegan and gluten-free goods, allowing a wider demographic to come in and enjoy their food. While all of their food is great (have you tried their nachos?) we’re really big fans of their donuts.

All of their donuts are made from scratch and are both vegan and gluten free. You’ll find different flavours each and every day; they’ve got classic flavours such as cinnamon sugar and chocolate dipped, as well as more unique flavours such as pink lemonade and banana chocolate.

Whether you’re visiting Democracy for a business meeting or to just catch up with friends, you have to grab a donut before you leave. Trust us, they’re worth it!

 Mulberry Street Coffeehouse

In the mood for a good cup of coffee and some baked goods? Mulberry Street Coffeehouse is the spot for you. This James Street North coffee shop not only has an incredible atmosphere, but it also boasts an inclusive menu. While majority of their baked goods are both vegan and gluten free, their donuts are the real showstoppers.

Handcrafted with love, their donuts make delicious eats much more accessible for those with dietary restrictions. Don’t be fooled by the words gluten-free or vegan; the flavour of these donuts packs a serious punch. With flavours like vanilla toasted coconut, spiced chocolate and espresso chocolate chip, these are guaranteed to be some of the best donuts you’ve ever tasted.

If you’re in the neighbourhood, make sure to stop by Mulberry Street Coffeehouse and pick up a donut.

  The Perfect Bite Bake Shoppe

The Perfect Bite Bake Shoppe is taking Hamilton ‘virtually’ by storm. As a made to order service, The Perfect Bite receives customer orders online and creates their goodies exactly the way their customer wants. While The Perfect Bite creates all different kinds of baked goods, their most popular item is their protein donut.

Their protein donuts are made from good quality carbs like blended oats, healthy fats like coconut oil, and the best quality whey proteins available. Each of these fluffy, cakey donuts contains 9 grams of protein.

When combining great taste and great health benefits, The Perfect Bite Bake Shoppe has it down to a delicious art.

  Darling Donuts

Craving donuts but have a smaller appetite? Darling Donuts is a pre-order only bakery that specializes in miniature donuts. The donuts are perfect for birthday parties, special events and thank you gifts.

Darling Donuts has a fun, whimsical style, decorating each donut with care. They incorporate different flavours, glazes, colours, and toppings to make sure each donut looks as special as your occasion. The owner is a sweetheart and her mini donuts are of a rare breed where they’re both vegan AND gluten free!

Everything’s a whole lot cuter when it’s miniature, and Darling Donuts only proves that theory with their mini baked donuts.

  Doughboy Donuts

Doughboy Donuts is a new kid on Hamilton’s dessert scene. Only opening in October last year, they’ve made big moves to prove themselves as one of the best donut spots in town.

What we love about Doughboy Donuts is that they feature fun, funky flavours. While we at TrueResident love our classic donuts, how can we possibly pass up flavours like Nutella rocky road, mango coconut pistachio or breakfast cereal? Some time you’ve got to live on the edge – these donuts are the perfect way to do so.

Full disclosure: Doughboy Donuts is closed for the summer. It’s been hard, but we’re very patiently waiting for fall to come so we can sink our teeth into these donuts. In our opinion, they’re worth the wait.

  Donut Diner

Donut Diner is a Hamilton Mountain classic. As their name suggests, they’re a classic diner that not only serves breakfast and lunch, but they also make some delicious donuts.

If you’re more of a traditionalist, Donut Diner has the donuts for you. Old fashion plain, chocolate, chocolate dip, maple dip… they’re got the classics you know and love. With years in the game, they know exactly how these classics should be made.

The next time you’re driving on Stone Church Road East, be sure to make a quick stop.

  The Donut Stop

The Donut Stop is known for two things: fresh coffee and fresh donuts.

Located on Parkdale Ave N in Hamilton’s industrial area, this small donut shop has gained a loyal following from those living in the area as well as those working at the mills or breaking after a long trip on the highway.

Baked fresh daily, The Donut Stop serves up all the classics. Whether you’re looking for fritters, coconut dipped, Boston cream… if it’s a well-known and well-loved flavour, they’ll have it.

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced coffee and donut date, definitely check out The Donut Stop.

  Donut Monster

After three years of business, Donut Monster is known across Hamilton for their success story and high quality donuts. Starting as a supplier for many Hamilton coffee shops, Donut Monster has grown into a full-fledged business open seven days a week.

Donut Monster donuts are yeast-risen and soft with a light chew. Their menu is ever evolving, featuring unique seasonal glazes and flavour combinations you may have never tried before. As an inclusive eatery, Donut Monster offers both vegan and traditional options.

Donut Monster is every bit worth the hype. Their flavours are innovative, their staff are courteous, and as a company they are a true representation of the ability to do anything in Hamilton.

  Grandad’s Donuts

Coming in at our top spot in Grandad’s Donuts. The family owned and operated donut shop has been hand-making donuts every morning for more than 30 years. With over 120 years of combined experience, the shop’s four bakers only use the finest ingredients and traditional methods to produce their remarkable donuts.

Grandad’s has over 30 different flavours to choose from. From walnut crunch to sugar twist, to apple spice to double chocolate, donut lovers of all ages are sure to find something they love. Our personal favourite donut is the Ghostbuster — think Boston cream, but imagine it being filled with whipped cream instead of custard.

Grandad’s Donuts has everything down to an art: with fantastic flavours, great prices, vintage charm, and years of experience, there truly is no better spot in the city.
