The 10 Best Taco Joints in Hamilton for 2018

Tacos aren’t just for Tuesdays, Hamilton. If you switch around a few ingredients, you can have tacos for best breakfast, lunch and dinner, too!

There’s plenty of great spots to grab some tacos in Hamilton, but we’ve narrowed them down to what we believe are the absolute best in the city.

Here’s our 2018 list for the 10 best taco joints in Hamilton.

  Planted in Hamilton

Kicking off our list at number ten is Planted in Hamilton. While we often picture tacos loaded up with meat and dairy, it’s entirely possible to have completely vegan tacos.

Not only does Planted in Hamilton reign supreme as our favourite vegan restaurant in the city, but they also make our favourite vegan tacos. Using bright, fresh ingredients in innovative ways, Planted in Hamilton is able to offer their customers the delicious, soft-shell tacos they crave while still adhering to a vegan lifestyle.

The next time you’re looking for a healthy alternative to a traditional taco, be sure to hit up Planted in Hamilton. We suggest giving their sweet potato tacos a whirl!

Doors Pub: Taco Joint & Metal Bar

Let’s face it: if the restaurant has the word ‘taco’ in its name, it’s gotta be good! Doors operates as part taco joint and part metal bar; while most would consider the two an unorthodox combination, the marriage of food and music truly works.

One of the coolest parts about Doors is that they really cater to the late night crowd. Unlike most bars, Doors serves food up until last call – you don’t have to worry about rushing to get your tacos before the kitchen shuts down. The tacos are also reasonably priced, meaning you won’t break the bank if you staying late!

Whether you’re looking for a low-key place to grab a late lunch or seeking an alternative to Hess Village’s nightlife, Doors is a great place to check out.

  XXX Burrito

Our number eight spot goes to this small but mighty shop right off the Kenilworth Access. Best known for their Burritos, XXX Burrito also whips up some seriously mean tacos.

XXX Burrito’s soft shell tacos are both reasonably priced and completely customizable. All of their ingredients are fresh; they use 100% real meat, no MSG and everything they make is low sodium. The portion size for each taco is fantastic – trust us, not only are you getting your money’s worth but you’ll be leaving feeling downright satisfied.

If you’re looking for the best spot to grab a quick taco order to go, we recommend XXX Burrito.

  Papagayo

When it comes to authentic Mexican food in the city, Papagayo is easily one of the best places to go. With friendly service, a colourful atmosphere and delicious food, it should be on your radar.

While you can order tacos as an appetizer, we like that their soft taco meal comes with sides. At lunch you can get two tacos with your choice of filling (plus all the garnishes), rice and refried beans for an excellent price. To really boost the flavour of your tacos, we suggest putting some rice inside the taco and dipping it into the refried beans.

Papagayo is easily one of Hamilton’s best hidden gems. The next time one of your friends wants to try something new, direct them to Papagayo.

  Vimex Corner

We love when a restaurant is a triple threat: one that has good food, good music and good prices. We’re here to confidently say that Vimex Corner delivers in all three categories.

While Vimex Corner offers a variety of authentic Mexican dishes, we come for the tacos. When we order, we get the Tacos Suavecitos – that gets us three soft tacos stuffed with our choice ground beef or ranchero chicken, as well as refried beans and Spanish rice. For only $12, it’s an incredibly filling dish and truly hits the spot.

Vimex Corner is the perfect spot if you’re looking for a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere to grab a quick bite to eat.

  The Mule

Sliding into our fifth spot is The Mule. Known for the tacos, tequila and bourbon, The Mule knows a thing or two about flavour and getting the party started.

While their tacos aren’t ‘authentic’ or traditional, The Mule puts a delicious spin on your run-of-the-mill tacos. Instead of sticking to ground beef or pulled chicken, The Mule is busting out decadent and delicious ingredients such as pork belly, halloumi and gingered carrot. If you’re looking to try something out-of-the-box and be amazed, give their Brussels sprouts taco a try.

The Mule makes for a great evening spot for eating, drinking and spending time with friends. If you’re looking to try something new, check out The Mule.

  Mesa

Let’s be honest: everything on the menu at Mesa is delicious. If you’re looking for a spot that’s big on flavour, doesn’t skimp on portions and is authentic, Mesa is the place.

When ordering tacos at Mesa, you have the option of soft corn tortillas, flour tortillas or corn hard-shells. Your two tacos will be filled with either your choice of meat or vegetarian cactus. Served with rice, beans and salad, this dish is filling, flavourful and guaranteed to satisfy.

As one of our absolute favourite Mexican restaurants in the city, we believe Mesa makes some pretty incredible tacos.

  Mezcal Tacos & Tequila

Mezcal is a Mexican-inspired eatery known for (you guessed it!) tacos. Using not only ingredients from Mexico and Latin America in their dishes, Mezcal also makes sure to use what’s grown locally in Hamilton.

Mezcal’s tacos are fresh, innovative and unlike any other tacos we’ve tried. Using an assortment meats, seafoods and vegetables, Mezcal is able to create dishes that are creative and have a multi-cultural flair. Currently some of our favourite tacos include the General Tao, Piri Piri Chicken and Carnita.

We recommend checking out Mezcal as either a fun first date or an adventurous dinner out with friends. Be sure to check out their specials – they’re always cooking up something new!

  Ole Gourmet

Every time we speak to someone about the food at Ole Gourmet, we always hear the same thing: the food is worth the wait. After having experienced Ole Gourmet, and in turn experiencing their great prices, friendly staff, incredible flavour and fresh ingredients, I’m happy to confirm their food is indeed worth the wait.

Their tacos are simple, fresh and hit all the flavour notes. The tacos can either be filled with chicken, beef, or chorizo – either way, you can expect the meat to be moist, the toppings to be fresh and the flavours to be bright. If you’re up for a challenge or feeling really hungry, we suggest ordering their Taco Grande.

The next time you’re craving tacos, Ole Gourmet needs to be a top contender. Trust us, you’ll love it.

  Maria’s Tortas Jalisco

Coming in at number one is Maria’s Tortas Jalisco. Located on Highway 8, Maria’s is well worth the drive.

We’re happy to announce that every day is Taco Tuesday at Maria’s. While we’re fans of Maria’s entire menu (you haven’t lived until you’ve given the Tortas Jalisco a try) we’re suckers for her tacos. With your choice of shredded chicken, shredded beef, ground beef, or chorizo, Maria’s $2.50 tacos are unbeatable in terms of value and flavour. Being so reasonably priced, Maria’s is a great option for families and friends of all ages and appetites.

What we love about Maria’s is that it’s family owned, the flavours are superb and everything is made out of a place of love. Maria’s is an incredibly underrated spot that deserves so much more attention. If you’re out by Highway 8, you must stop at Maria’s.
