Hamilton’s Top 10 Spots for Fries in 2021

A perfect fry is a beauty to behold.

Crispy on the outside, soft and steaming hot on the inside, and seasoned ever so thoughtfully to create the perfect snack or accompaniment to a meal.

Thankfully, Hamilton has no shortage of options for fantastic fries in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from skinny shoestrings to wide and wonderful waffle offerings.

To help narrow down your quest for some of the city’s best, here’s a list of our Top 10 Hamilton spots making fries that are more than worthy of your taste buds’ attention.

Bliss Kitchen

This plant-based gem in Waterdown is known for its stacked vegan menu of satisfying and nourishing bowls, burgers, and beyond.

But a full section on their menu is dedicated to a wide selection of loaded fries, featuring a mix of hand-cut white and sweet potato fries drowning in incredible toppings that feature absolutely no meat or dairy whatsoever.

Highlights include the Curry Fries, loaded with coconut curry sauce, vegan feta cheese, green peas, and red onions; and the Burrito Fries, featuring house guacamole, vegan sour cream, black beans, sun-dried tomato tapenade, red peppers, and chives. They’re bountiful, cruelty-free, and oh-so satisfying.

 Hutch’s

The fries at Hutch’s are certainly nothing fancy, but they have endured as one of Hamilton’s most reliable options with a hefty dose of nostalgia.

Thick cut and satisfying – especially as part of an order of their famous fish & chips – the fries at Hutch’s are the definition of a local staple, best eaten while lounging in the sand at Van Wagner’s Beach on a prime summer day.

With two bustling locations in the Hammer, this place has been around since 1946 and is still going strong among Hamiltonians who like their food to be as straightforward as it is delicious.

Brux House

This Locke Street gastropub is as renowned for its well curated craft beer selection as it is for its menu of hearty, elevated eats.

Amid a tempting and ever-changing menu of handcrafted burgers, schnitzels, salads, and more, Brux House also brings their A-game with their Belgian-style fries that are an impeccable combination of crispy and soft.

Served with excellent house-made malt mayo and curry ketchup for dipping, these babies are unmissable. A single order is enough to share; but if you want to crush them solo, we won’t judge even a little.

The Pigeon

This Mount Hope hidden gem has become known for its takeaway menu of comfort food designed and crafted by veterans of the culinary industry.

Headed by Chef Matt Beasley (formerly of Equal Parts Hospitality) and Jenny Ngu, The Pigeon makes some of the best fried chicken sandwiches in the game. But the fries here are also worthy of note: served in absolutely massive portions, and available as regular fries served with house garlic mayo or the exceptional truffle fries with a side of truffle mayo.

The Pigeon’s fries are cut in a skinny shoestring style not unlike McDonald’s, but make no mistake: these blow the fast food giant out of the freaking water.

 The Staircase

Since this well-loved Dundurn Street arts venue and café was taken over by a trio of new owners last year, The Staircase’s menu has transformed into a playful and enticing line-up of pub bites and comfort foods that also happen to be 100 per cent vegan.

Plant-based burgers, pasta dishes, wraps, and more adorn the varied menu, but The Staircase’s fries are absolutely not to be missed. Gloriously thick cut and generously portioned, the fries here are tossed in seasoning that I can only assume is made of pure magic. Delicious, hearty goodness.

 MERIT Brewing Company

One of Hamilton’s best and most innovative craft breweries is also the only brewery in town to sport its own on-site kitchen, pounding out exceptional house-made sausages and snacks in their James North beer hall setting.

But locals also rave about MERIT’s fries, and it’s not hard to see why: they’re impeccably cooked, crispy yet soft, and served with Dawson’s spicy mayo or house curry mayo for dipping. (Be warned: these fries are blanched in beef tallow, but they can easily be made vegetarian by request.)

MERIT’s outstanding kitchen may be closed for the time being, but those fries will be a hot commodity when they open up again. Mark my words.

 HAMBRGR

We would be remiss not to include this titan of Hamilton’s food scene.

HAMBRGR’s inventive burger fare deserves fries of an equal calibre, and these don’t disappoint. Not only are standard and sweet potato fries available with an impressive number of house-made dippers, but HAMBRGR kicks things up a notch with garlic-parm fries, cheesy fries, and chimichurri fries.

If that wasn’t enough, HAMBRGR also has some diverse, creative poutines on the menu, with toppings like Southern fried chicken, Montreal-style smoked brisket, and 12-hour braised pork shoulder. This is as drool-worthy as it gets, folks.

 MaiPai Tiki Bar

MaiPai Tiki Bar – a venture by Salar Madadi of Pokeh fame –  is a newer entry to Hamilton’s food scene, but it has already garnered a widespread reputation for its incredible range of Detroit-style square pizzas.

Next time you order a pie, make sure you grab an order of MaiPai’s fries too. One of the few options in the city for a waffle-cut style of fry, MaiPai’s straight-up spuds are perfect just the way they are. That said, if you really wanna take a first-class trip to flavour town, check out the Parm Fries, which are tossed in gochujang butter sauce, fresh Parmigiano Reggiano, and scallions; or the Ketchup Fries, coated generously in ketchup chip spices. Immaculate.

 The Burnt Tongue

With three locations and a devoted customer base, The Burnt Tongue remains one of Hamilton’s premier spots for lunch.

Though known best for their rotating selection of soups, stews, and curries, The Burnt Tongue also makes some mean Belgian-style fries, double-fried for optimal crispiness.

A straight-up order with Dutch mayo and curry ketchup is enough to completely satisfy, but The Burnt Tongue also offers popular selections of loaded fries, including their famous Bangkok Fries which are smothered in garlic mayo, sriracha, hoisin, cilantro, and roasted peanuts. Grab a Burnt Tongue soup, burger, or grilled cheese as well, and you’re in business.

 Rony’s Restaurant

This Stoney Creek fixture is known for its delicious chicken, slow-cooked over charcoal and served with a range of sides including rice and potatoes.

But the fries here are also a rare and perfect treasure: hand-cut in house using Burbank Russet potatoes from Hillspring Farms in New Brunswick, and crafted using a lovingly meticulous process that takes days to complete per batch. No wonder so many Hamiltonians cite them as the best in town.

Pro-tip: an off-menu option known as the Fries with Benefits loads that potato-y goodness with chicken, yogurt sauce, and amba, which is an Iraqi condiment made with pickled mango. Sounds unreal, right?
