Shakespeare’s celebrates 50 years

Amidst all of the exciting new additions to Hamilton’s expanding restaurant culture, it’s important to celebrate those trailblazing restaurants who helped pave the way for the city’s culinary identity.

Shakespeare’s, the delightful classic steak and seafood restaurant on the corner of Main Street East and Ferguson, is celebrating their 50-year anniversary.

When Shakespeare’s was opened in 1969 by Franco Putignano, the 26-year-old Italian immigrant had ambitious dreams opening a high-end steakhouse in a steel-town. Now, 50 years later, Franco’s restaurant continues to provide the same quality fine dining service he promised in 1969.

Few things have changed since the opening of Shakespeare’s, one change being the help of his son Leo, daughter Christina, and son-in-law Peter.

One thing they have never compromised on, to the delight of their customers, is the quality and portions of the food. Shakespeare’s is not your average steakhouse.

While they do provide quality beef, they also offer delicious wild game, and an extensive selection of fresh fish and seafood. All of their food is carefully selected each morning to ensure its freshness.

Through this fifty-year journey, Shakespeare’s has become the premier popular destination for celebrities visiting Hamilton. Shakespeare’s has hosted the likes of Martin Short, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Eugene Levy and James Franco to name a few.

Celebrities and locals alike have come to Shakespeare’s for the premium food and service, but also for the delightful ambience. When Putignano hired a design for the original design in 1969, he wanted the place to look classy and intimate. He went with dark wood, historic looking paintings, and leather-padded chairs, all of which remain in the restaurant today.

With a combination of delicious food, fine wine, and the intimate ambience, it is no surprise that Shakespeare’s has been host to many marriage proposals over the years.

In a heartfelt Facebook post shared by the management staff at Shakespeare’s, they took the time to thank all of their customers for allowing Franco’s dream to come true.

For this classic Hamilton fine food staple, is clear that the charm of this restaurant stems not from the terrific dining experience, but the people behind the experience.
