Burlington restaurant Emma’s Back Porch has closed its doors after 30 years

Another longstanding local restaurant has sadly folded amid the stresses of the COVID-19 crisis.

Emma’s Back Porch, a staple of Burlington’s restaurant scene and a go-to spot for pub bites, beers, and comfort food, announced yesterday on their social media that they will not be reopening on the other side of the pandemic. The restaurant has been a Burlington food fixture for 30 years.

Though the restaurant did what most others have tried by pivoting strictly to take-out, they cite a dramatic dip in business as the key reason for shutting their doors for good.

“Circumstances have prevailed and we cannot move forward,” said Emma’s Back Porch in their announcement, while reminiscing about the good times the restaurant had in its three fruitful decades of business.

“The last 30 years have been truly the best. So many memories, friendships and occasions to be celebrated, too many to count. We sincerely appreciate that you have celebrated all of these moments with us. We feel we have been a part of your families and are so thankful for your patronage over the years.”

The reaction to the restaurant’s announcement was beyond immense, with their post on Facebook receiving over 2,700 comments from heartbroken locals and long-time patrons sharing memories and saying their final goodbyes.

Sadly, Emma’s Back Porch isn’t the first local restaurant to permanently close as a result of COVID-19. Even more sadly, it likely won’t be the last.
